Hungerford was officially twinned with the town of Ligueil in Indre-et-Loire, France in 1980. Since then there have been many group delegations to and from the two towns including the Fire Brigade, the Round Table, the Town Band and the John 0′ Gaunt School.
Ligueil is a delightful town of about 2,500 inhabitants in central France about 40 km from the city of Tours. It lies in beautiful countryside on the edge of the Loire valley surrounded by farms and pretty villages. There are many chateaux and vineyards close by.
The Hungerford Twinning Association is a friendly, sociable group of all ages who live in and around Hungerford. Our aim is to promote friendship and cultural enrichment as we alternate playing host to twinning exchanges with the people of Ligueil. Many of the close friendships that have been established continue over many years and embrace new generations of “twinners”. You don’t have to speak fluent French to take part; in fact you would be surprised how many twinners communicate without the benefit of a shared language, but of
course a smattering of French does help.
New members are always welcome as they bring fresh ideas to the partnership and help to keep our twinning activities rich and exciting. Annual membership costs just £10 per household.
Meetings and events:-
Our annual highlight is an exchange visit either to or from France. Between exchanges and throughout the year, we hold regular social and fundraising events, giving members, friends and potential new members informal opportunities to get together.
In 2014 Hungerford was host to a large group of visitors from Ligueil. The visit took place over the August bank holiday weekend and many events were organised to show our guests a proper British welcome.
This year we are visiting Ligueil from May 22nd to May 26th. We will travel by coach to St Pancras where we board the Eurostar and then transfer in Lille to the TGV bound for Tours. The final part of our journey is by coach to Ligueil.
This promises to be an enjoyable and sociable way to travel. You are welcome to join us whether or not you are a current member of the Hungerford Twinning Association. You will be placed with a friendly French host family for the duration of your stay, and there will be many community and family events arranged by our hosts.
Costs are estimated to be about £150 per person. Please contact Joy Gilbert…..
